What is food security?
"Food security exists when all people at all times have physical and economic access to health factors including sufficient, safe and nutritious food, potable water and adequate sanitation, to meet their dietary needs, food preferences and the minimal care requirements, essential for an active and healthy life" I have expanded the definition from the World Food Summit and incorporated elements of nutrition, care and food utilization. Disagree? Come to the site and share your view by adding comments or content to the issue on the definition of food security --topic guide, Jean-Charles Le Vallée.
Who it's for
All who share our professional or educational interest in food security are welcome to join us. You might typically work at a university or an NGO in the developing world and be looking for resources not readily available to you. Or you might be in need of a quick answer to a tough question.
What this site does
The site aims to draw on your experience to identify some of the key issues in food security, elaborate on them through constructive, open debate, and point to the best resources available to resolve those issues.
What areas it highlights
As a starting point the guide and his advisors have identified the following key areas in food security. Other content is welcome but postings on these areas will receive more attention on the page: World Food Summit: five years later; Africa; GMOs and Biotechnology; Emergencies; Gender; Health and Nutrition; Policy; Sustainable Livelihoods; The right to Adequate Food; Training; and Water. Your thoughts about what should be added to this list or removed from it are welcome.
