Access to Land for Urban Agriculture
Urban agriculture has always been part of urban settlements. In the past and even today many urban inhabitants turn to it as part of their livelihood strategy. Although the quantity of food produced by city farming does not match up to that outside the city, its impact is quite considerable. Yet, national and municipal policy do not acknowledge this important role, but consider urban agriculture as something of the past, and one that does not have a place in modern urban design. This poses sever more...

HIV/AIDS and its Impact on Africa's Rural Workforce
The projected 26% decline in the agricultural workforce from 1985-2020, makes Namibia look like the hardest hit of all the Southern and East African countries. Sadly it is far from being the exception. The decline - otherwise ranging from -13% in Uganda to -23% in Botswana - causes the FAO to speak of "rural disintegration". Acknowledging that "80% of people in the most affected countries depend on agriculture for their subsistence", the FAO also sees the health sector as having to provide most more...

A hundred years too late?
World Food Day was a painful reminder of commitments made and broken. FAO reports suggest that the goal of halving the number of the world's hungry to some 400 million people by 2015 will be overshot by one hundred years. That's five generations. This year's World Food Day revolved around the International Alliance against Hunger, a multi-agency private and public-sector effort to combat hunger. In the light of the failure so far to even approach the World Food Summit goals, there have to be que more...

Trade Distortions and Poor Farmers
Most seem to agree that trade distortions should be eliminated. How fast and how far are some of the key questions that have to be answered at the upcoming fifth ministerial
conference of the World Trade Organization in Cancún, Mexico. The negotiations taking place between 10-14 September 2003, will make all the difference to the lot of poor farmers around the world. The Doha Development Agenda, concluded in October 2001, made a strong commitment to raising levels of development in impoverish more... |

End to War, but not Hunger, in Democratic Republic of Congo
The Democratic Republic of Congo has finally put an end to four years of war with Rwanda and Uganda, but the country's economy continues to bleed as a result of the conflict. According to the World Food Programme, some 1.4 million people need urgent food aid. Malnutrition rates are high among internally displaced persons, refugees, children and the elderly, and is thought to account for more than 50% of infant mortality. The World Health Organization estimates that the healthy life expectancy of more...

Following up on their 1999 report "Genetically modified crops: ethical and social issues" the paper, which is very upbeat about GM crops, is intended to contribute to 'GM Nation?', a public debate organised by the UK government. Visit their site (link below) to download the report and to send comments before 8 August 2003.

Governance
There's a clear link between good governance and reduced hunger. Wherever hunger is a pressing concern, improved governance must be a high priority. In its absence, gains in food security can be impeded or completely undermined. The deficit is particularly serious at the national level.
A May 2003 report to the Committee on World Food Security described good governance as "a key element in the realization of (...) the right to adequate food in particular."

World Intellectual Property Day
For centuries, much agricultural innovation in Africa has been the outcome of communities working together to find the solutions that best serve their needs. In the new age of intellectual property rights, the assumption of shared ownership of knowledge can no longer be made. Some see in this a further threat to the food security of Africa and other parts of the developing world. April 26 is World Intellectual Property Day, so take the opportunity to get up to speed by viewing our collection of more...
